Website therapy session

Is your website feeling a bit run down or unsure of its direction? Maybe it needs some therapy!

Surprised at what's on screenPerhaps it’s not feeling like a good fit for you and it’s not making a good impression on your audience. Or you know it’s time for a tune-up, and you’ve been putting off thinking about it.

You need someone with fresh perspective to tell you what’s working, what isn’t, and what the most important fixes are. Someone who can work with you on authentic branding and communication in an insightful, relaxed way.

This package

That’s just what this is. We’ll have a one-hour Skype video call to look at your site together. You’ll see where to focus so more visitors engage with the site and build a relationship with an authentic sense of you.

These are the main things we’ll explore.

  • What’s the experience like for visitors? What will draw them in or drive them away?
  • What’s the site saying about you? Does it back up who you say you are and how you approach your work, or are visitors picking up dissonance?
  • Are there any obvious technical glitches that need addressing, like display problems or rough copy?

Is this you?

Maybe you’ve had a website for a while. A lot of people just throw one up quickly as one of the many things they need to do to get going. Then the box is ticked in their mind and it doesn’t feel like it needs action.

Perhaps you’ve been looking at your site recently and realising it doesn’t make the impression you want. Maybe you think you know some of the reasons why; or maybe it’s just a nagging itch that you need someone to solve for you.

Maybe someone set your site up for you and they didn’t actually have a good eye for design. It happens. Perhaps they weren’t up to date on thinking about what makes an effective site. Perhaps they disappeared and you’ve just been muddling through on your own.

Maybe you’ve never really sat down and thought through the key impressions you want your audience to get about who you are and what you do. Often people just grab colours and fonts and wording that catch their eye at the time. But are they actually effective?

I see a lot of people who are doing great work to make the world a happier, healthier, more creative place, but their websites could be so much better at showing them in their best, most authentic light and drawing people in.

Why work with me?

Tim photoHi, I’m Tim Gray. One of my superpowers is seeing how words and visuals combine to create a message, and when information is getting through or getting blocked. It’s connected to being an introvert with the highly sensitive (HSP) trait.

I can pick up very quickly on what your site is ‘saying’ at the big picture level, and on issues at the detail level. When there’s techy stuff involved, I can explain it to you like a normal person. But mostly the techy stuff isn’t where the issues are – it’s about design choices and psychology. Even big, successful sites get those wrong. You don’t have to.

Lots of people look at websites for selling or search optimisation or whatnot. I’m primarily about websites for communication: speaking to an audience and giving messages about who you are as well as information to help them. It’s about what you say, how you say it, and how you present it.

Process

Once we agree to work together, I’ll send you an exercise called ‘Background message finder’ to do before the call. It’s simple and only takes a few minutes. It’ll draw out key impressions of you and your approach to bake into your communications.

On the call, we’ll talk a little about the essence of what you do – the outward description, and what the background message results turned up. I’ll also ask you to tell me a bit about your audience.

We’ll go on a tour through your site, noting impressions and issues. I usually start with homepage first impressions, then zip about a bit. (On a big site we’ll only have time to look at key pages.) We’ll look at visual design, colour psychology, usability, structure and writing – in a supportive, non-techy way aimed at giving you info you can use.

There’ll be plenty of chance for you to ask questions. I’ll leave you with a shortlist of three or so most important things for you to address.

After the call I’ll send you a brief report of the main things we covered.

Note. Sites vary a lot. Some will give us a lot to talk about, and some will only need a couple of tweaks. If I don’t think you’ll get good value from our call I’ll let you know before we go ahead.

What does it cost?

The investment for this package is £150.

To go ahead, please mail me so we can arrange a call. Give me a couple of sentences about you, the address of your website, and an idea of when you’re available to speak.

Your website is your home base on the internet, and the only thing you have complete control over. You choose what you say, how you say it, and how the visuals present it to your audience. So don’t miss the chance to make it as authentic and powerful as you can.
